monday update
Stocks opened the day with a small gap down on overseas selling. They quickly snapped back and rallied until 11:30. during the push higher, the SPX/DOW/NDX/NAZ all posted marginal new highs for the uptrend. The NDX/NAZ again rallied to make their high for the day at 2:00. When the SPX failed to confirm this high, the market pulled back quickly. Going into the close the market rallied a bit, but still finished mixed, with the SPX/DOW closing marginally lower, and the NDX/NAZ a bit higher.
Checking the charts this afternoon, I noticed that the SPX has done the minimum required to complete this fifth wave, and the multi-month uptrend. We have five waves up from the Jul06 lows, labeled: i - ii - iii - iv - v; and five waves up from the wave iv low, labeled 1 - 2 - 3 - 4 - 5. Also, the SPX is displaying negative RSI divergences on the hourly/daily/weekly charts. The NDX is not quite as clear, and may have a little more work on the upside to complete its minimum structure. Accomplishing the minimum structure, of course, does not mean that the uptrend has completed. But it is a good place to start looking for the eventual turning point. Short term sentiment has risen sharply bullish in recent weeks. Investors Intelligence readings are now the highest they have been since the beginning of 2006, see chart. The bulls are now outnumbering the bears 5 to 2. The COT readings are now displaying heavy selling by the Commercials, the Speculators are just beginning to sell, and the public is buying, see charts. Our Tech bellwethers: Google and Apple, both accomplished their goals of making new all time highs during this uptrend. Confirming our OEW analysis, of an increasingly stronger bull market, lead by the Tech sector in 2007. And, all the major indices made five wave structures up from their medium term lows. All this indicates that, it's becoming increasingly risky to be long stocks at current levels. Expecting the upcoming correction to provide and excellent buying opportunity longer term.
MEDIUM TERM: neutral ... major indices completing their uptrends
