Nokia Third-Quarter Profit Falls 4% on Restructuring Costs
By Juho Erkheikki
Oct. 19 (Bloomberg) -- Nokia Oyj, the world's largest maker of mobile phones, said third-quarter profit fell 4 percent because of restructuring costs.
Net income dropped to 845 million euros ($1.06 billion), or 21 cents a share, from 881 million euros, or 20 cents, a year earlier, the Espoo, Finland-based company said in a statement today. Sales rose 20 percent to 10.1 billion euros. The median estimates in a survey of 10 analysts were for profit of 868 million euros and sales of 9.88 billion euros.
Chief Executive Officer Olli-Pekka Kallasvuo lost U.S. market share to Motorola Inc., which reported the smallest sales growth in five quarters on Oct. 17. Nokia has added music players and faster Internet access to European handsets and tapped the Chinese and Indian markets to make up for slower revenue growth.
``Its obvious that Nokia has lost market share in North America and maybe in China and India too,'' said Erkki Vesola, a Helsinki-based analyst at Mandatum Stockbrokers who rates Nokia stock ``reduce,'' before the report. ``Our concern is not the third-quarter figures but their outlook for the fourth quarter.''
Nokia said June 22 it abandoned plans to develop handsets with Sanyo Electric Co. for networks used in North America and Japan, because spending on the technology probably wouldn't pay off. Nokia said it would book a charge of about 150 million euros to restructure the CDMA unit in the third quarter.
Before today, shares of Nokia had gained 3.2 percent this year, giving the company a market value of 65.3 billion euros. The Dow Jones Stoxx 50 Index has climbed 9.9 percent in the same period. Nokia's shares have risen as much as 8.7 percent and dropped up to 11 percent on earnings days in the past two years, when results beat or missed analysts' estimates.
Market Outlook
Global mobile-phone unit sales in 2007 will rise by less than 10 percent for the first time in five years, according to London-based researcher Informa Plc. To counter slowing growth in Europe and North America, Nokia has added music players, cameras, e-mail devices and faster wireless connections in saturated markets to beef up selling prices.
Nokia's market share fell to 33.6 percent in the second quarter from 34 percent in the first quarter, according to researcher Gartner Inc. Motorola's share rose to 21.9 percent, the highest level in more than five years, from 20.3 percent in the first quarter.
Motorola shipped 53.7 million phones in the third quarter, falling short of its 55 million goal. The Schaumburg, Illinois- based company blamed the shortfall on its European performance and lower demand for phones with walkie-talkie style functions.
U.S. Challenge
In the U.S., Nokia slipped one notch to third place in market share during the second quarter, under pressure from Motorola. The U.S. company will this quarter start selling the 1/3-inch-thick Motofone, its thinnest product yet, as it seeks to build on the success of the half-inch Razr.
Motorola's Chief Executive Officer Ed Zander, 59, is betting a line of thin, low-cost phones will help him break Nokia's dominance in China and India. Nokia is challenging Motorola, the market leader in the U.S., with slimmer phones such as the N75.
Smaller competitors Samsung Electronics Ltd. and Sony Ericsson Mobile Communications have in the past week reported better-than-expected third-quarter earnings as they sold more mobile phones.
Nokia in July predicted ``some'' decline in selling prices this year after the average prices fell to 102 euros in the second quarter from 103 euros in the first. It reiterated in July a forecast that the global handset market will expand at least 15 percent this year.
